A SEVERELY DEHYDRATED MICHAEL ON DOZAKA-TOGE

It just had to happen…

It was of course complete insanity to go out cycling in this kind of scorching weather in the first place. Yes POSITIVO ESPRESSO suffered its very first fatality…well nearly that is! Michael was on the brink of disintegration following an excruciating climb of Dozaka-toge and he would have surely gone belly up if a tender-hearted Jerome had not supported him all the way to the top. On top of Dozaka-toge (Yamanashi Pref) is where Michael fell apart at the seams…

Up to Dozaka, the ride was piping hot but all four us, Michael, Jerome, Nishibe-san and I managed to cool ourselves down making stops here and there for manju and drinks, lunch, bucket-full of ice cold water…we were actually going at a very decent pace. Road 35 through Akiyama-mura is quite peaceful, little traffic and moving gently more up than down to the Hinazuru-toge tunnel. Fortunately for Michael, the long refreshing Doshimichi downhill was waiting for us. Somewhere midway, we filled up our bottles and cooled off our heads under a huge faucet with cold water forcefully pouring out…we had no idea that we would be in a real Turkish bath half an hour later…at one section the road was completely wet and steaming after a passing rain must have gone through the area. Later I found out that there had been an incredible downpour over Fuchu which even brought the Keio Line to a temporarily standstill. The Turkish bath felt so nice…especially when a dump truck would pass by and sprinkle you all over with misty water. Michael recovered litlle by bit but it was Jerome who got his second wind as usual late into the ride. Jerome even resolutely decided to continue riding all the way to Kamakura over Yabitsu! Crazy!! Michael decided to hop a train at Sagamiko Station and Nishibe felt by a hunger knock and I attacked the fourth and last climb of the day, Otarumi which felt so minor in comparison to Dozaka! Curious to see Michael’s graphs of the ride with his analysis! We were lucky we did not lose Michael but all in all, it was a great day of cycling!

Tsukuba 8 Hours Endurance Race July 19th

Alain and Olivier from NFCC and me are attending the eight hours Tsukuba endurance race on July 19th. This is not only a great race where team Positivo Espresso used to achieve
outstanding results in the last years (hello jane!), but also it used to be the first race I ever attended in my succesful career as JCRC amateur rider. That was in 2003 with Juliane, Shindo, Kurata, Matsuda, Kikuchi and some other guys from the previous Veloz team.

I have registered a team of three riders, but as we know from previous experience, it is no problem to ride with four or more riders, just need to exchange the Seken from time to time. It would be great if we get a team together of four or five riders. I know that Tom has other commitments and that Juliane and david are out of town, but perhaps David and Jerome are interested? It would be perhaps even possible to let Jerome’s son ride some laps?
Please let me know if somebody is interested.

Spot the difference [from Daily Miyake Post]

Out of the above four photos only two are screen shots from James Bond movies. The other two are from cheap German/French agent flicks from the zeroes. Can you spot the difference?

Doshimichi – Izu Alternative for Saturday April 5

Jerome and I actually started at 7AM on the minute, made it up to the top of Doshimichi (the tunnel at the summit) and back before 4PM. We were at Takao in 1 hour and 18 minutes … and the pace fell from there, mostly as Jerome patiently throttled back as I suffered a bit on the hills — not enough sleep Wed or Thur nights = no power for an early Saturday start. I managed 21:02 over Otarumi — 17 seconds below my time a few weeks back, and without pushing at all on the upper part of the slope. We rode 180 km plus and the weather was ideal. With the gas tax cut, lots of people decided it would be a good weekend for a drive. Too much traffic along the way, though you don’t notice it when descending back down Doshimichi, at least, except when you pass someone in the S curves.

JEROME & TOM DOING THE DU

Jerome and I participated in the JAPAN CALFMAN DUATHLON (MINAMI KANTO STAGE) last Sunday…5km run/ 30km bike/ 5km run…a first-time experience for me but not so for Jerome who is used to mountain-running, triathlons and other excruciating endurance sports. And yes, Jerome naturally beat me with more than 4 minutes!!

Results Under-50 Category:
Jerome 28th 01:44:32
Tom 35th 01:48:37

For next year, I’ll certainly add some running to my training program. Highly recommended this Calfman! You’ll love the muscle pain!

The Positivo Espresso Jersey Design Contest + Entry No. 2.1 +

I have to admit that I can hardly think of any other thing any more than the Positivo Espresso design. I looked and the last version again and again and did some more changes:

  • I checked some of the other WAVE ONE designs and found out that it does look good if you change the background color only in accordance with the different parts of the jerseys. So I made the dark grey area a little bit bigger, cutting over to the front.
  • I showed the designs to Anna and she made the wonderful suggestion to arrange the flags like a ring on the edge of the sleeves. So I selected some other flags, including the Flemish lion rather than the Belgian flag for Tom, the Portland City Flag for David and the Moenchengladbach City flag for me instead of the seal of the pope.
  • I put the Positivo Espresso Name higher on the front of the jersey, otherwise it might get compressed by an inflated bottom line.

Ok, we can have endless discussions about the background colors most likely.
But later please.

So after I did all this I thought, hey let’s make some special versions for some prominent riders from the team which you can find below. Just by chance, with the yellow background, the cross is now matching perfectly the national flags of Belgium and (East) Germany.
Of course in case of Jerome, a completely different approach needed to be choosen.

Deserted Tomin-no-Mori

RdV at Koremasa Bridge with Jerome (NFCC), Adam (NFCC) and Nishibe-san at 8:30…everyone on time…not a small feat with today’s freezing temperatures! A midwinter ride it turned out to be indeed. Like last week, there was a fairly strong and chilly headwind blowing from the northwest slowing us down far below 30km/h. Nishibe-san left us at the Itsukaichi 7/11 and the 3 of us headed towards the Honjuku T-junction undecided where to go from there as we had entered twilight snow zone. I was intent to break my previous TT-record and as soon as we passed the T-junction, I began to give everything in my might. Sorry for leaving you guys behind! Once I passed the Uenohara Y-junction, roadside snow and ice on the road began to take increasingly frightful proportions. For some reason (the cold?) I just couldn’t find the right cadence today and was shifting gears constantly…no good for the legs – I tell you! As soon as I drove into Tomin-no-Mori’s parking lot, I stopped my stopwatch….1:04:10…sh*(*)t! I had just failed to reach my under-1h goal. It has got to be the season….only way to defend myself. Wrong season for breaking records…yeah yeah! Tomin-no-Mori was completely deserted, just like when I got there the day after last fall’s typhoon. Tried on one of those special „heat-tech“ face masks (the kind that makes you appear like a bank robber) for the descent…wow this feels great…except my big nose felt like freezing off and so did my fingers….gloves being of very little avail. Heartbeat dropped down to 110 during the descent and this does not help to keep warm. I was careful not to gain any speed in order to avoid slipping and slamming down the surface on those „Eisbahns“ that were lurking around most shadowy curves. I reached Itsukaichi safely and it then occured to me that I had not crossed Jerome and Adam…they must have wisely turned to the left at the Uenohara Y-junction. Saw Michael who was cycling on the other side of Mutsumibashi-dori direction Itsukaichi…quite a late start you made there Michael! I bet you did the Jerome hill… Took a long 42C hot bath right after I reached home a little before 14:00…wow this felt good! Can’t wait for my next 大寒 ride!

JEROME TOGE (a.k.a. Ume-ga-tani Toge)

[Tom] Found Michael’s message late last evening proposing a ride over the notorious Jerome Toge…couldn’t resist of course. It’s always nice to have an excuse to wake up a bit early even on the day before Christmas. The ride was quite powerful – three hours flat – without a break (except for the obligatory photo session). Here are the pics…

[Michael] I was only too happy that Tom called me the night before and confirmed that he would ride with me. Otherwise I wouldn’t have the strength to leave the warm bed in the morning. Wake up at 6.20hr, left the house at 7.10 hr and was 2 minutes before 8 at Sekidobashi where Tom was already waiting. Had some strong headwind moving out but the pace was ok.

Then he really pulled it and we were going 34 km/hr average along the Mutsumi Dori towards Itsukaichi. I had problems to keep up and was already pretty much exhausted when we reached the Sakamoto crossing, the start point of the Toge Baka #5 : Jerome Hill.

Perhaps you are wondering why this hill is called Jerome Hill. Well, the hill was first described in the ancient „Annals from Zipangu“ [Kodansha, AD 584] when from the nearby sea French gods descended from the waves as shown in the photo (right: original photoshot from AD 584, left: later re-done as a major movie with Halle Berry). The gods brought various types of French cheese with them which they intended to distribute to the needy and the poor in the Musashino plains. However, before reaching their destination, they had to cross a high mountain and on the way up they were so exhausted that they ate almost all the cheese they have brought with them. Upon which they returned to France, only one of the lesser gods called Jerome move over the hill to the plains where he happily lived ever after.

In any case, I was already done before I started the climb. Tom did it in 8:16 min and me in 10:28 min. The nice thing about Jerome hill is, that it is followed by an even nicer descent. The roads were still wet so we were a little bit careful. Then we had a very nice backwind taking us home and we were zooming with 38 km/hr along the roads. We saw some bonfires prepared at the Tamagawa for the new years eve and for the first time I could see the mountains behind mount Fuji from the river. The view was really magnificent.I said goodbye to Tom, this might have been the last ride of the year. Than with the full backwind I speeded home : 112 km in 4:14 hr, no breaks, some kind of sprint perhaps.

So herewith I declare the Christmas ride to Jerome’s hill as a new tradition. One has to start early in the morning and be back before noon. No breaks are allowed, as this is the start of the fastening period, which lasts until 5 PM the same day. Hope you will join next year.
