Congratulations for the 6th time to Sean Hennessy – Australian National Penny Farthing CHAMPION!  The original fixed gear.

SERIOUSLY big bikes whizzed around Evandale yesterday as the historic town hosted its 31st annual Village Fair and National Penny Farthing Championship.

Village Fair committee member Di Sullivan said organisers were thrilled with the turnout. „It was a great success, the racing was good and the weather was beautiful, I think everyone really enjoyed the day,“ she said.

Riders from around the world visit Evandale to take part in the penny farthing races, which are recognised as the world’s largest annual event devoted to racing antique bicycles. The final was raced over four laps of the circuit, a distance of one mile (1600m).

This year’s winner was Adelaide rider Sean Hennessy, who took home his sixth Penny Farthing Championship trophy, making him the event’s most successful rider. No one else has won more championships.

About 6000 people attend the Village Fair each year to watch the bike races and enjoy entertainment and market stalls. The penny farthing races have been held at Evandale since 1983, based on an event held at Tunbridge in the 1970s.
